Finding a Clinical Trial

Once you have talked to your doctor about a clinical trial and decided to explore participating in one, the question is which trial?  Your doctor may be able to suggest a study to you.  You can also look up many different trials on www.ClinicalTrials.gov, a listing of studies being conducted in the United States and around the world. ClinicalTrials.gov tells you what disease is being studied, whether or not the study needs more participants, who may participate, where the study is located, and contact information for the study.  Not all studies are listed on www.ClinicalTrials.gov, but certain studies (studies that will be published in a medical journal, for example, and studies on the effectiveness of a new drug to treat a serious disease or condition) must be listed on the site.  Clinical trials that are not listed on www.ClinicalTrials.gov but that we know are being conducted are at the bottom of the page.

To find a trial, you can use the links below which will give you a current listing of all the open studies by one of the three diseases specified, either in the United States or anywhere in the world.  Once you click the links below, you will see a list of different studies.  Click on the title of the study to see the detailed information, study description, study locations, and contact information for each study coordinator.  (Please note that a few of the studies listed may not apply directly to aplastic anemia, MDS, or PNH but appear in the listing because the disease—aplastic anemia, MDS, or PNH—appears in the section "Study placed in the following topic categories.")

Studies on aplastic anemia conducted in the United States
Studies on aplastic anemia conducted around the world
Studies on MDS conducted in the United States
Studies on MDS conducted around the world
Studies on PNH conducted in the United States
Studies on PNH conducted around the world

You can use the advanced search function on the ClinicalTrials.gov database to limit your search to a certain state or to a different country, to use a different search term, to select a specific treatment, or to specify the study phase, among other options.

Remember, before you sign a consent form, Clinical Trials Explained can help you understand the potential risks and benefits of a clinical trial.  You can also contact the AA&MDSIF staff to discuss any questions you have at clinicaltrials@aamds.org or by calling the office at 410.867.0242 or 800.747.2820.

Additional Clinical Trials

Not all trials are listed on www.ClinicalTrials.gov.  The investigators may have chosen not to register the trial, or the study may not be eligible to be listed on ClinicalTrials.gov.  If the study has not, for example, been approved by a human subject review board, it cannot be posted.  Some trials are not listed because the investigators are not planning to publish the research findings, so you can ask the study coordinator why the study has not been included on ClinicalTrials.gov before you give your consent to participate.

The information on the studies linked below is provided strictly as a resource, not as an endorsement of any given treatment, doctor, or medical center.
