Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. Does the applicant need to locate a PI or mentor to work with or will AA&MDSIF ‘match’ students and mentors?

AA&MDSIF currently does not have the capacity to provide matching services. A student may propose an appropriate project in a lab within which she or he is already located, working with their current P.I., or elect to seek out a new P.I. or different lab in which to carry out the 10 week project.

Q. Will AA&MDSIF accept multiple proposals from the same applicant during the same funding cycle?

Yes. Applicants are invited to submit as many project proposals as they wish, however each proposal must be significantly distinct from any concurrent proposals.

Q: How many fellowship grants will AA&MDSIF be making in 2015?

We anticipate that 2-5 fellowships will be awarded in 2015.

Q: Will you take other funding into consideration when you decide to make an award?

We realize that $5,000 is a nominal amount, so will not penalize applicants for holding other grants or fellowships concurrently. However keep in mind that it is the applicant’s responsibility to verify that no violation of existing funding agreements will occur if the AA&MDSIF award is accepted. Please verify prior to submission.

Q: Is there flexibility with the 10 week project period?

Yes there is some flexibility within the funding period, but we expect the project will be conducted over a single, continuous period of time such as a summer period between semesters, rather than performed in conjunction with regular coursework.

Q: Are applicants allowed to reapply for a second year of the fellowship during the following year?

No, our intention with the award is to fund as many fellows as possible, so are therefore unable to grant second year extensions.
